Stories of Amazing Recoveries from Brain Injury

Veronica Gomes

On May 19, 2004 my son was in a car accident. He was flown to a trauma center with a "traumatic brain injury", they said the frontal lobe was severed. They first told me that he might not make it 24 hours. Well, he did. They then induced a coma for 3 days to keep him still while his brain swelled. After 3 days they took him off of the medication and nothing happened. He remained in a coma for 2 more days. 2 days after that he opened one eye, then both. At this point we asked him if could see us and he shook his head yes. (By the way, the doctors told me that he might never wake up from the coma). A day later he was trying to sit up. He continued to get better everyday. He came home on June 6th and is continuing with his outpatient rehab but for the most part is 95% back to where he started. I suspect that within 2 more weeks, he will make a full recovery. Don't let anyone take your hope away.
